'O Vesuvio

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae, and several other settlements. Contrary to popular belief, the volcano did not erupt lava but hot ashes called pyroclastic clouds or surges. It erupted many times since then, and the first record of lava flows were on 1036, the last eruption was on 1944.
